When the sunlight reaches the Earth’s surface it is absorbed and then radiated back into the atmosphere as heat.  The greenhouse gases in the atmosphere catch some of this heat and let the rest escape into the space.  The amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere decides the amount of heat being trapped, the more gases in the atmosphere traps more heat.
